We had some fun with sensory play today. I bought some super cheap shaving cream, and sprayed a bunch onto a cookie sheet. She was very excited to try this. She did want it colored, and I didn’t have any food coloring in the house, so I tried something I saw in a preschool book: rub chalk on sandpaper to get a bunch of colored dust, and then add that to the shaving cream. It worked! The colors were super light. I could have added more, but just a little was enough to satisfy her and I didn’t want to use up all the chalk.
Not surprisingly, after about 3 seconds Curly declared she needed her hands washed. She usually doesn’t like having her hands dirty. Since she wasn’t a fan of using her hands, I brought out utensils from her mini kitchen, like a couple different spatulas, cups, strainers, and spoons. That was much more of a hit. We made ‘ice cream’ and ‘pudding’ and ‘cake’. We pretended to smooth it like it was frosting, and pretended to make a mountain with little ‘people’ all around it.
Note that this is a messy activity to do inside (are ANY preschool art activities mess free??). Not even the dog escaped unscathed!
After a while she returned to being okay with getting her hands dirty and it turned into a body painting activity . 🙂 So afterward it was to the bath, and I took the opportunity of throwing all the ‘dishes’ she used in the tub with her. She had fun ‘washing dishes’, and that took care of much of the cleanup. Her creative juices weren’t done for the day, however. This was the first time she had seen the chalk (I’ve kept it well hidden!!) and she really wanted to draw with it. Since it is incredibly rainy outside we couldn’t draw on the sidewalk, so I took out some construction paper. That worked just fine.
